Composing Style: Mid-Project Feedback

  1. Teacher feedback: Zak, your composition is true to the style you are emulating, your choice of chord progressions/instruments is good and you keep your song interesting with your variety of chords and instrumental arrangement (although, there are some places the piano does/doesn't work - this is something to look at in more detail). You do, however, need to ensure that there is a sense of clarity between sections so it sounds like a well-structured song. In other words, make sure you'd be able to tell an unfamiliar listener which part is the intro, chorus, verse etc. - think about how songs you listen to are structured and integrate this into your composition. Additionally, you really need to complete your lyrics to give the song a proper country reference - use lyric generating websites for inspiration.

    - I like the guitar because it is clear and fits well with the country genre. To improve I think Zak needs to shorten it and make the piano part less complicated to fit with the style and tempo, and also add lyrics.

    - It has a catchy melody that sounds great. To improve, the transitions between sections could be smoother.

    - It was very organised, I like the piano that played in the background. However, I think he should take out the recorded bit and add a fade-out.

    - It is a good piece of music and it is really easy to track where each instrument is playing.

    - Very good composition of chords, however you could include a wider variation of chords and patterns.

    - I like the fact that this piece was quite slow and soft, which sounded nice. He could make it more interesting by adding some different elements.

    - I like how it is not too repetitive, although sometimes it could be less so.

    - Could add vocals and bass - a nice range of chords, however.

    - This is an interesting piece, I particularly like the piano in the background.

    - The main melody riff is nice and the piece flows nicely. Lyrics need to be added to prevent the piece from becoming too repetitive.

    - I like the range of sounds that the guitar made throughout the song which went really well with the drum beats.

    - sometimes the chords clash

    Teacher comments:

Melody/ tune - where is it?
Middle section sounds a little muggy and confused ? Quick string section is it?
    Clear structure
Does the end rhythms / beat work?
    Too long?

Here are a few things to think about. The overall composition is really good. Just a few areas where you can think about changing potentially
